Emily Veldman
is an Artist and Illustrator based in Los Angeles
Through painting and sculpture, Los Angeles based world builder Emily Veldman captures the narratives of her expansive fictional land. This new realm serves as a sanctuary for Veldman, a place where she can address and heal from the complexities of her mental health.
Each canvas represents a blank slate, where Veldman blocks out life’s responsibilities and anxieties, replacing them with vibrant and captivating fantasies. Patterns, bright colors, and composition form the stage transporting viewers to an alternative universe, one where personified flowers and animals reside. The true magic unfolds as she incorporates materials such as felt, yarn, and embroidery floss. These elements add texture to the canvas and introduce fresh perspectives. Crocheted yarn morphs into a rug on a wooden floor, while fabric and string transform into laundry hanging on a clothesline.
Veldman is inspired by the power of art to transport others to different worlds and to help them process their emotions. Her hope is that her work will provide viewers with a safe space to heal and to find joy in the midst of their struggles.
